Biography

Samuel Davis, son of Dolar Davis and Margery Willard, was born in 1639, possibly at Duxbury, Massachusetts as his father took his oath at Duxbury between 1636 and 1639 and had land grants there in 1640. [1] [2] [3]

He removed to Concord with his father, leaving Barnstable in 1655. [1]

He married at Lynn, Massachusetts on January 11, 1665, Mary Meaddows. [1] [2] [4] [5] [3]

Mary Meaddows Davis died at Concord, October 3, 1710. [2] [5] [1]

He married second, on October 18, 1711, Ruth Taylor. [3] She died August 6, 1720. [2] [5] [1]

He was the father of seven children, all by his first wife. [2]

He was a farmer/husbandman and settled in that part of Concord which afterwards was set off as Bedford. [1] [2]

  • 1713: May 8: Sells house, barn and 9 acres to Eleazer Davis. [2]

1675: Aug. 4: Samuel Davis credited to the company of Capt. Parker who marched with Major Willard to the relief of Brookfield. [6]

Homestead

Samuel Davis purchased, in 1696, the homestead in the west part of Bedford, then Concord. It was conveyed to Samuel, Sr. by John Jones, Jr., Samuel Hartwell, Sr., Joseph Dean, and Nathaniel Harwood, of Concord.

The dwelling (1891) is on the site of the original house, up high, overlooking the Concord River. It faces in the same southerly direction. For the first century and a half it was painted red; but was changed to white after some repairs.

The homestead has passed through six generations from Samuel, every heir being named Eleazer until Benjamin Josiah was born in 1810; and, later, became the heir. Thirty-eight Davis children were born in the first five generations on this estate. This estate is regarded as remarkably well located for healthfulness; and, longevity was noted in the family which has been prominent in the history of the town and church ever since the incorporation in 1729. Davis-61490 and Davis-186 appear to represent the same person because: Both have same wife, but info in Davis 186 appears more reliable. Hester was born prior to marriage and likely does not belong to these parents!

Davis-10856 and Davis-186 are not ready to be merged because: According to GM series, his second wife was Ruth Taylor, not Rhoda Taylor Parsons. She should be detached from 10856- before merging. Thanks

The Samuel Davis, Davis-186, born at Concord 1639, married first Mary Meadows, then Ruth Taylor.

Mary Waters is the wife of Samuel Davis Davis-120 and should be removed from this profile.
