Estate records show her date of death as Oct. 1827.

Mrs. Estelle Guess Bethea of Darlington, SC, a descendant of the son John Jr., writes that her ancestor, John Guess Sr. was a native of England and first lived in PA, then migrated to VA where he married, thence to NC and on to SC. She bases her statement on information given her in 1920 by a great-uncle who at the time was 89 years old. John Sr. was a Revolutionary War soldier in NC and moved to SC 1783.

The 1790 Orangeburg Dist., SC. censuses of 1800 & 1810 show him in Barnwell Co.; his Last Will & Testament was dated 1 Sep 1817 and was probated 18 Oct 1817. Sarah was born in Pasquotant Co., NC. Her parents were Thomas Davis and Linda Griffin.

Sarah's family had been residents of Pasquotant Co. for generations. Her ancestry can be traced to James Davis, the first immigrant to America from England. This great grandfather was a resident of the original Jamestown Colony.

Sarah's parents are buried in NC. At this time their graves have not been located. Sarah was the only daughter of Thomas and Linda Davis. She had four brothers. She married John Guess in Pendleton, SC, in 1769. Sarah was 15 at the time. They had nine Children. They eventually moved to Barnwell, SC, and were the owners of a large plantation. At their deaths they were buried on their plantation, which is now owned by Voorhees College. Their grave stones have been lost to time.
