S. Davis-Dixon: Davis family history handed down: He deserted the CSA and joined the Union Army with brother in law, Granville Tyree, on 12/25/1862 at Beckley Courthouse, Raleigh Co., WV. Private Co A 30th Battalion Sharpshooters. Suffered eye injuries and had typhoid. The eye injury was reported to be due to him resting his rifle against a split rail (wooden) fence to aim and he was shot at - the bullet hit the wooden fence, splintered, and the wood chip went into his eye. The name "Raver" came from the fact that he was a "raving republican". Every year he'd have a flag raising - very patriotic.
