Ruth Elizabeth "Bette" Davis (/ˈbɛti/; April 5, 1908 – October 6, 1989) was an American actress with a career spanning more than 50 years and 100 acting credits. She was noted for playing unsympathetic, sardonic characters, and was famous for her performances in a range of film genres, from contemporary crime melodramas to historical films, suspense horror, and occasional comedies, although her greater successes were in romantic dramas.[1] A recipient of two Academy Awards, she was the first thespian to accrue ten nominations.
She had a notorious, decades long feud with rival, Joan Crawford, Lucille Fay (LeSueur) Crawford (abt.1905-1977). It started over a petty jealousy of Joan announcing her divorce from Douglas Fairbanks, Jr, stealing the attention from a PR stunt setup to announce Bette’s new movie. Crawford also had an affair with Clark Gable whom Davis had a crush on. Their disagreements became serious when Bette fell in love with actor Franchot Tone and Joan stepped in and married him. The rivalry continued and eventually became public knowledge as the each gossiped and maligned each other’s appearance, love-lives, careers, awards, upbringings and even their respective children.
