Research Notes

for the interest of those researching the ancestry of this family -

from an obituary written for his son, James Davis (1823-1906) [3] “Mr. Davis was a direct lineal descendant of the O'Donnells, of Ulster, who, together with the O'Neills, were expatriated for their rebellion soon after James I. came to the throne. The O'Donnells took refuge first in Rome, but subsequently removed to Wales where the family changed their name to that of Davis, finally settled in Devonshire, England, from whence they emigrated to New Zealand.“

Richard DAVIS was appointed by the Church Missionary Society of the Church of England to the New Zealand Mission as a Missionary Agriculturalist. He departed England with his wife and young family in 1823 arriving in Australia in May 1824. After three months in Parramatta with members of the Church Missionary Society, the family travelled to New Zealand, arriving at "Marsden's Vale" Paihia in the Bay of Islands. His wife died in 1837 leaving him with 9 children ranging from 7 to 25 years old. Richard married in 1838 to Anne Ives (b1818-1854), who was buried in his plot but unmarked on his headstone. A year after her death he married again in 1855. Find A Grave Index" site.
