Biography

Eleanor "Ellen" Davis was born on September 7, 1807, in Garrard County, Kentucky, to Rachel West, age 40, and John Davis , age 44. She was the youngest child in her large family.

C. C. Teeter married Elinor Davis on 22 November 1823 in Garrard County, Kentucky. John Davis was listed as her father. Joseph H. Totten was bondsman. [1] They had 16 children in 21 years, of whom two sons and a daughter died in infancy and are buried without names.

In 1850, her family was living in Liberty, Jefferson County, Iowa. They had nine children living at home on the farm. [2] By 1860, they had relocated to Independence in Appanoose County. and six children were living with them on the farm. [3] In 1870, only their son Robert was still living at home. [4] [5]

Ellen died on September 8, 1880, in Mystic, Iowa, at the age of 73 years and 1 day, and was buried in Appanoose County, Iowa, in the Concord Cemetery. [6]

"To my eldest son Samuel Davis-the place I live that I purchased of Elijah Kertly up to the branch emptying into the creek, up said branch to the back line.
To son William Davis--Land from said branch and upward together with that land I bought of Benjamin Wheeler.
To son James Davis-the place below me over the creek lying in Madison Co. that I bought of Green Clay together with 50 acres bought of Cragg. Also my rifle gun.
And whereas I have in time past given my son Samuel Davis a mare and colt, also my daughter Mary Wheeler a mare, I hereby disallow them from being accountable for the said hereafter.
My sons Samuel , William &James Davis to maintain my wife Rachel Davis during her wife (life?) as widow. She can rent out some land.
I bequeath her bed & household furniture--at her death, the same to be equally divided amongst my children.
Also should I decease before my three youngest children, William, James, and Eleanor have sufficient education-$70 to be appropriated by executor for their education.
Whereas my daughter Mary Wheeler has been (or seen) a deal of trouble and care with a Negro women of mine named Hannah who is pregnant; therefore for her trouble and care I will and bequeath the child she is with to my daughter. And should said child die immediately or not be born, I allow her a reasonable charge out of my estate to be paid by executors.
To daughter Eleanor a mare and two cows as good as I gave to my sons at her marriage or on her being of Lawful age.
Whereas I have given my two daughters Elizabeth Hurt and Anne Totton each one mare and two cows and calves a piece...
And whereas among the misfortunes attendant mankind my son Thomas Davis is not as yet as sensible a person of his age usually are therefore for his better support $120 over and above his regular share...
All my slaves to be valued and divided equally amongst my 8 children as before named. Two Negroes apiece hopefully--value equal.
My executors to maintain son Thomas, or cause it to be done and care for his Legacy during his or their life,
And Lastly, I make and ordain my son Samuel Davis & my brother Samuel DAVIS my executors.
Witnesses: John Gromer, Frederick Gromer, Payton Cooke and Stephen C. Duncan.
