William may have been the grey eyed, dark complexioned, 5'7" blacksmith born in Butternut, New York, who deserted the United States Army on 14 April 1820.
The 1820 census reported him as a farmer and fur hat maker living in Cherry Valley, New York, where he married Deborah Dutcher on 25 September 1825. They lived in Buffalo in 1830, and Black Rock through 1840 and 1850; but had moved to DeKalb County, Indiana, by 1860, and lived with his son William in Wabash in 1870.
