Biography

The Birth and Death Dates are a rough estimate. See the text for details.

Born: Abt 1765-1775, North Carolina
(son, John, lists father's birth place as NC on the 1880 US census) Marriage: Susannah Meadows on Jan 7, 1799
Died: Bef 1850 Greenbrier County, West Virginia

Peter Davis, son of Unknown Parents, married Susannah Meadows, daughter of William Salon Meadows and Sarah Davis, on Jan 7, 1799 in Greenbrier County, Virginia. (Susannah Meadows was born about 1781.) WV Will Books 1756-1971 Fayette Co: Will of Peter Davis (dec'd) dated March 16, 1841. He leaves to Feby (spelling may be Fehy) Ann Davis one horse and saddle, one bed, and one cow. The rest he leaves to his wife until her death and then to be divided equally among his children. Witnesses were: William Meadows, Richard F. Tyree, and William Davis. Interesting to note that there is an "Ann Davis" age 16 living with Susan (Susannah) Davis in the home of Richard & Priscilla Davis Tyree for the 1850 US Census. She is not in the home for the 1860 US Census. (For the 1870 US Census in Monroe County, WV, there is an Ann Davis White Female living in the home of Gibson Bobbett - keeper of poor house; Ann is 35 and born in WV and can not read or write - labeled "idiotic".

NOTE: S. D. Dixon: Susannah's parents are also uncertain as there are spelling variants and strong evidence among genealogical researchers in many different directions. More research and documentation is needed to verify with certainty.

1810 US Census Monroe Co., VA listed as Peter Davies, head of house: Males: 1 under 10; 1 age 26-45 Females: 1 age 45 + (living near Meadows & Roach families) "United States Census, 1810," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XH28-9S4 : accessed 9 June 2019), Peter Davies, Monroe, Monroe, Virginia, United States; citing p. 593, NARA microfilm publication M252 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll 70; FHL microfilm 181,430.

1820 US Census Greenbrier, VA, lists Peter Davis as head of house: Males: 3 to age 10; 1 to age 16; 1 to age 45 Females: 2 to age 10; 2 to age 16; 1 age 45+ Living nearby is William Davis next door: Males: 1 to age 16; 1 age 45+ Females: 2 to age 10; 1 to age 16; 1 age 45+ Samuel Davis (nearby): Males: 1 to age 10; 1 to age 18; 2 age 18-26 Females: 1 to age 26; 1 to age 45 Richard (nearby): Males: 2 to age 10; 2 to age 16; 1 to age 45 Females: 3 to age 10; 1 to age 16; 1 to age 45 (Samuel and Richard are Davis Family names - makes logical sense that these were somehow related).

1840 US Census Fayette Co., WV (VA): Peter Davis is listed as head of house with the following: Males: 1 age 10-15; 1 age 20-30; and 1 age 70-80 Females: 1 age 15-20; 2 age 20-30; and 1 age 60-70 Slaves: 7 / agriculture Nearby is John Davis as head of house with the following: (probably Peter's son) Males: 1 age under 5; 1 age 5 - 10; 1 age 30-40 Females: 2 age under 5; 1 age 20-30 "United States Census, 1840," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XHBM-K46 : 13 September 2017), Peter Davis, Fayette, Virginia, United States; citing p. 162, NARA microfilm publication M704, (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll 555; FHL microfilm 29,685.

The 1850 & 1860 Census Greenbrier County, Virginia. shows that Susanna was living with her daughter, Priscilla, and husband Richard Tyree (possibly Paint Creek, Fayette, Virginia area). Peter was not listed.

Stephen and Sally had two children: Peter Randolph Davis and Sarah Davis. Executors of Stephen Davis will in Nov. 1857 were Peter R. Davis and Hugh J. Davis.

John Davis b. abt. 1748 who married Jane / Jean Clendenin (Greenbrier Co. VA) in about 1776. John Davis died about 1800 in Greenbrier Co. and both his will and later, his wife's will, are transcribed on the web. Witness to John Davis' will is a John Stuart (also witness to some of Peter Davis' documents).

John Davis 1790 Census for Rockingham Co., NC (there are 3).

A land deed (Rockingham Co.) that a Jn Davis sold property that he was granted by William Bethell on 9/24/1789 to William McCollum on 11/25/1797. (naming trends? Peter's first son was John).

Nancy (Jones) married a John Davis in April 1790 in Pittsylvania Co., VA (it borders Rockingham Co. on the north).

WILL OF PETER R. DAVIS (June 2, 1836) Warren Co., NC / NC Dept. of Archives C#100.427 Book 40 Page 90 & 91 Summary: Peter R. Davis of Warrenton, in County of Warren / state of NC lists a sisters, Rebecca Williams, Nancy Powell, Elizabeth Pitchford, and Polly Kearney. It also lists a brother, Stephen Davis and his son (Peter's nephew), Peter Davis. His sister's daughter (Peter's niece), Mary Williams, is listed. He leaves his friend, George Anderson his houses and lots that Thomas Reynolds lives in Warrenton.

William Davis (possible brother) - 1810 Giles Co., VA census (b. before 1765 and d. between 1820 - 5/15/1824 in Virginia (Giles or Wythe Co.). - Owned land / sold land on a branch of the south fork of Walker's Creek - waters of New River.

1782 Greenbrier County (West) Virginia Personal Property Tax List - transcribed by Jeffrey C. Weaver, 7/18/1998 (he states it was difficult to read and may contain errors) ..... lists the following Davis males: Danl., Jas., Wm., Jacob, Jno., Joseph, Patrick, Wm. (Joseph, Patrick, and Wm., were next to each other on the list), John, John (the second John was next to an Isreal Meadows on the list). He then lists the 1796 Greenbrier County (West) Virginia Personal Property Tax List with the following Davis males: William, Richard, Joseph, James, Joel, Walter. He finds that this William Davis' wife is named Mary - and land deeds showing that Wm. Davis and wife Mary Davis of Greenbrier Co., sold 318 acres to James Graham. He goes on to tell of a William Davis b. about 1756 in VA and died 1815 in Greenbrier / Monroe Co., who married Mary Packwood. It tends to count this William out as the father of Peter - and tells of William's capture by indians as a small boy. There is also mention that following William's name on listings (annual), is the name Richard Davis - believed to be William's brother and shared adjoining land parcels. William and Mary Packwood had children: Editha, Jacob and Rachel.

History of the Greenbrier area: James, Samuel and Andrew Davies settled there in 1773 on Beaver and Stoney Creeks.

In following the possibility that Peter's father's name may have been William: In nearby Surry Co., NC, there are a number of Davis families on the 1790 census (four named William). The most likely of these William Davis' homes showed 2 males over 16 and 3 males under 16 and 5 females. Just under this William's name is Jonathan Davis - living by himself, aged 16 yr +. On the 1810 census of Surry Co., NC, there are many Davis families (26). There are 3 William Davis listed on this census. The one with the oldest male is listed as 45 yr + / has 4 sons between 10-26, 4 dtrs (2 under 10 and 2 between 16-26), and older female(wife?) 45 +. More investigation into the Davis' family of Surry Co., NC is needed.

Samuel Davis - Captain John Boyle's Company, 1 Apr 1780 were at stations on or near Dick's River, now in Garrard, Lincoln and Boyle County and included Capt. John Boyle, Lt. Samuel Davis (and then mentions James Davis' name).

Sarah Davis - originally from NC, married Isaac VanBibber - they lived in Greenbrier Co. She had a brother named James - and the family belonged to the Angelican Church of England.

There is also occasional reference to Peter Davis being "Black Dutch". There is an excellent article about this term on a Black Dutch Native American blog "Blackdutchnativeamericans.blogspot.com" by Robin Davis: "The information for this site is for use at the Family History Library(FHL), Salt Lake City, Utah. The following information on the Black Dutch Native Americans can be found in the book "Cherokee proud : a guide for tracing and honoring your Cherokee ancestors" by Tony Mack McClure. The call number in the FHL is 970.3 C424mc 1999 and can be found in the 2nd Floor Reference Section. The text is found on pages 103 - 105." She mentions a "John Sevier's expedition in 1774 into the southern Appalachian area mountains (eastern TN, KY, southwestern VA, and western NC). No definitive answers are given but German, Native American, among others and certainly "mixed" cultures play a part in the name.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Peter by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Peter:
