Biography

Joel was born in 1872. He was the son of Turner Davis and Margaret White.

In the 1880 census [1] Joel is living in Concord, Sumter, South Carolina with his half brothers Miles Hampton (age 20) and Edwin Dickey Plowden (age 19), and his sisters Hannah Jane (age 13), Frances (age 11) and Margaret C. Davis (age 4). Note: there are many errors and misspellings in the census. Turner Davis the stepfather and father had passed away the year before and the whereabouts of the mother Margaret is undetermined.

Joel married Bernice Robertson. In the 1900 census [2] Joel and Bernice are still living in Concord Township, Sumter, South Carolina. Joel's mother Margaret is living with them. She is married and carried the last name Hayes. The location of her husband is not with them.

In the 1910 census [3] he is living in Concord, Sumter County, South Carolina with his wife Bernice, their two sons, Joel Turner Jr. (age 7) and James L. (age 11 months), his mother Margaret, and his stepfather Joseph T. Hayes.

In the 1920 census [4] Joel and Bernice are living with their two children; Joel T. Jr. (age 17) and James L. (age 10). There are also three cousins living with the family, Lillian James (age 10), Earnest Davis (age 21) and Fannie Davis (age 20). By 1930 [5] the family is still together. Joel Jr. is now 27 and James (listed by his middle name Lynwood) is 20. And by the 1940 census [6] Joel and Bernice are together, James has moved out, and Joel Jr has moved his wife Josephine, both in their 30's, into the home.

Joel passed away in 1941 [7] and is buried beside his wife Bernice in the Davis Family Cemetery, Sumter, Sumter County, South Carolina. Find A Grave: Memorial #78815618

Research Notes

The 1880 census [1] presents several mysteries. In spite of the misspellings of the canvasser, it is relatively certain that these are the children of Margaret C Davis and her first husband Edwin Dickey Plowden (killed early in the Civil War) and her second husband Turner Davis. This census was taken a year after the passing of Turner Davis.

  • Where is the mother Margaret White, Plowden, Davis? Did Margaret leave to marry her third husband Thomas Hayes while there were still minor children in the home?
  • Who is Jane Plowden? Margaret's first husband Edwin Dickey Plowden died in 1862 and this Jane wasn't born until about 1867. Could Jane have been born before Margaret's marriage to Turner Davis? Who was her father? It seams more likely that her last name was Davis and was mislabeled by the census canvasser.
  • Francis Davis shows up in no other family documents. This is not odd because no 1870 census for this family has been found and she would likely have been married by 1890 or 1900. Could this Frances be Francis Davis who married Leonard White? A France Davis was added to Find A Grave at ...... but the date of birth does not match the age of the Frances in the census.
