Biography

John Riley Davis was born on 10 Dec 1861 in Charleston, Clark County, Indiana, the third child of Mary (Polly) Penrod and Milton Reese Davis.

On 23 Oct 1889, he married Josephine Americus Burgess, a daughter of Eliza Ann Richey and Thomas Hardy Burgess, at Pleasant Hill Church (which is located between Kansas, Illinois and Paris, Illinois). They had three daughters and three sons.

John lost his right hand in a farming accident. Even so, he built his own house in Humbolt, Illinois by himself with just one hand.

John passed away on 3 Jul 1933 in Humbolt, Coles County, Illinois and is buried at the I.O.O.F. cemetery in Humbolt County, Illinois

John Riley Davis Purchased land in Milton IL. 1019/1897 Block 7 Lots 4&5 for .00 ( Purchased from Waumplers second addition) Now known as Humbolt IL. Subject to tax 1899. (revenue stamp .50cents) John built his home in 1898 to 1900 with just one hand. The home at 713 Church Street Humbolt IL. still stands as of 2000. The home was sold in 1956 to The Mitchell's where Mrs. Mitchell is still living in the home as of 01/302000.
