Biography

James Quentin Davis, formerly of Columbia and Winnsboro, passed away at 7:00 yesterday morning in Washington, where his sister, Mrs D D Gaillard, and a nephew, David St Pierre Gaillard, and family have been residing.

Announcement will be made later of the funeral in Columbia.

He was a brother to the late professor R Means Davis of the South Carolina College, and second son of Lieut Col Henry Campbell Davis of Longleaf, near Ridgeway, and Isabella Harper Means, daughter of the Rev Robert Means of Fairfield, who was in early days a pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Columbia. He was born March 23, 1851, at Roseland, the old Means home in Fairfield County.

Mr Davis' education was begun by his uncle, E William Davis, in Ridgeway, and continued at Mt Zion Academy, and at the King's Mountain Military Academy; at Carolina he was in the class of 1869.

Active in '76

In the darker portion of the '70s, he conducted with R H Edmunds, Jr, as co-proprietor, a store in Ridgeway, 1872 to 1875. Here in 1876 he was active in organizing and leading forces opposed to the Radicals, with a result that it became necessary for him to seek safety for a while in Augusta and Shreveport. Under Hampton, he became treasurer of Fairfield County, remaining in office until 1891, when he declined to offer for re-election. In 1877, he married Beckie Armstrong Pagan, daughter of Maj James Pagan and Ann Fayssoux, ad made his home in Winnsboro. Here he was cashier of the People's bank, later of the Winnsboro National Bank. Here, too, h had an important part in making possible the development of the Great Fall power project financed by Northern capital; and he took active interest in developing good roads throughout the country.

Trustee Many Years

For many years preceding his removal to Baltimore and Washington, he lived near, or in Columbia. Here one of his most cherished interests was the university, as trustee of which he had been serving since 1900 and which he continued to serve until 1918.

Mrs Davis died October 11, 1921, and lies buried in the Presbyterian churchyard near the tomb of his grandfather, Dr James Davis, first physician of the asylum; and here, too, his mortal remains will be laid beside his wife in the old family plot.

Surviving him are the following members of the family: his sisters, Mrs W Herbert Ruff of Ridgeway, and Mrs D D Gaillard of Washington, DC; his daughters, Mrs J C Thorn of New York, and his sons: E Palmer Davis of Dunn, NC, C F Davis, now of Elberton, Ga; J Q Davis of Durham, NC.

John Bratton Davis, his youngest son, died a year ago in Hartsville, leaving a family, who survive him.

Col Henry C Davis, USA, retired, is his brother, and he and Mrs Davis are visiting in Fresno, Calif, their son, Maj Henry C Davis, Jr.

Mrs J C Thorn, who is on a visit to Los Angeles, will be unable to be present at the funeral. Members of the family kn Washington, who have been joined by C F Davis, will arrive in Columbia Tuesday morning. Others are expected Monday night and Tuesday. Probably, therefore, the interment may take place Tuesday in the early afternoon.
