Biography

Private Benjamin Davis served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: 10 March,1862
Mustered out: May 19, 1862
Side: CSA
Regiment(s): Co. C, 40th Georgia Volunteer Infantry

Benjamin was born in 1818. He passed away in 1862. He was a prisoner of the Union Army and died in that situation at the age of 44. He and Elizabeth had one daughter and five sons. They all moved to the Floyd Springs area in an ox-drawn wagon for the purpose of farming. He was a tobacco farmer according to the 1860 Agricultural Schedule of the 1860 Census for he grew 2,000 pounds of tobacco in Virginia. He purchased 170 acres of land on January 6, 1860, from John C. Boswell and settled near the Rosedale community.

When the Civil War began, Benjamin, age 43, joined Company C, 40th Regiment of Georgia Volunteer Infantry. He was captured by the Union Army in Knoxville, Tennessee and died as a prisoner. His body was returned home and buried in the old Primitive Baptist church cemetery in Curryville, Georgia.

Elizabeth was left to raise the family as well as farm the land. When the Federal Union Forces passed through Floyd County in 1864, they stopped at the Davis home and took everything they could carry away. When they left, Elizabeth and her children picked up the corn that had fallen to the ground when the Federals fed their horses. This was the new beginning for the family.

In 1869/70 Elizabeth sold the farm for $800 and she, along with all the children except Nancy Elinor, who was married to Sim G. Tomlinson in 1866, picked up their lives and moved to Lamar County, Texas. They traveled by wagon train and by riverboat and stayed in Texas unto December 1874, when they returned to Floyd County, Georgia. After that, all the children remained in Georgia, except Nancy Elinor, who removed to Tennessee.
