Biography

William Davis was baptised on the 12th of September 1830 at Broadway, Somerset, England, the son of Thomas Davis and Jane (Newton) Davis [1]

William Davis, 10, appears in the 1841 England census living at Ashill, Somerset, with his parents Thomas, 35, a blacksmith, and Jane, 35, and William's brothers; Henry, 8, and Samuel, 6. [2]

In 1851, William Davis, 20, and his siblings Henry Newton Davis, 17, Samuel Newton Davis, 15, and Anna Elizabeth Davis, 9., are living with their parents Thomas ( a blacksmith ) and Jane at Broadway, Somerset, England.[3]

He married Mary Ann Pegler in Bristol in 1854. the record is under the names Ann Pegler and William Davis. [4]

They had the following children:

  1. Frederick Handel Davis, b. 1856, Bristol, England. [5]
  2. Clara Jane Davis, b. 1858, Bristol, England. [6]
  3. Oliver Cromwell Davis, b. 1860, Clifton, Bristol, England. [7]
  4. Mary Ann Davis, b. 1868, Westminster, London, England. [8]

In 1861, they are living in Westminster, Middlesex. He is listed as William, 38, (born Ilminster), a "Blacksmith" ( in the family tradition ! ) with his wife, Anne, age 33, born Nailsworth (Near Stroud), Gloucestershire . They are two children there with them; Clara Jane Davis, 3, and Oliver Cromwell Davis, 1.[9] Their other son, Frederick Handel Davis, 5, is staying with his grandfather Thomas ( a Blacksmith ) in Broadway, Somerset. [10]

They are in Westminster, London, in the 1871 census: William, 41, is an Iron Worker. His wife, Mary Ann, 43, and their children; Fredrick Handel Davis, 15, Clara Jane, 12, Oliver Cromwell Davis, 10, and Mary Ann Davis,age 2, are also there with him. [11]

In 1881, William, 51, an Iron Worker is living at Alexandra Cottages, Beckenham, Kent. He is now married to Eliza, 60, born in Debenham, Suffolk. Two of William's children are living with them: Oliver Cromwell Davis, 20, born Bristol, also an Iron Worker, and Mary Ann Davis, 12, born Westminster. [12]

William Davis' death was registered in the March quarter of 1889 at Bromley, Kent, England. His age at death was registered as 59. [13]
