Wolf Davis, whose last name at birth was almost certainly other than Davis, was born about 1824 in Poland, married Selina there and had four children but sometime between 1853 and 1855 they moved to England and were living at Spitalfields, in Middlesex (now part of London) in 1861. They moved to New York in 1864 and he appears in records there as "William Davis." "Wolf" (William) is listed as a tailor in the British census of 1861 and in the United States census of 1870. His family is actually listed twice in the 1870 census, In June 1870 they were living in Jersey City, New Jersey (across the river from Manhattan). They are listed again, January 1871 in Manhattan. They may not have lived in New Jersey very long because the last three children were listed as born in New York. Wolf died in Manhattan in 1879.
