PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Shirley Elizabeth Smith, 83, passed away May 18, 2007, at Port Saint Lucie Nursing Home, Port Saint Lucie, Fla. She was born May 30, 1923, in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, the daughter of Hamden and Sarah Maria (McDowell) Davis of Red Beach. Mrs. Smith was a longtime resident of Calais and a 1943 graduate of Calais Academy. She and her husband also resided in Fort Pierce, Fla., and Milton, Fla. Shirley was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Maurice "Chromey" Smith; sister, Evilana; and brothers, Everett, Roscoe, Vernard, Oliver, Roy and Carl. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, A. J. and Karen Howell of Ringgold, Ga.; sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and Marie Smith of Acworth, Ga., and David and Denise Smith of Fort Pierce, Fla.; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, Jim and Rachel Howell and children, Scott and Laura of Longwood, Fla., Renee (Howell) and Glen Craig and daughters, Bronte and Brooke of Lookout Mountain, Tenn., Todd and Michelle Smith and son, Austin of Orlando, Fla., Brad and Leisha Smith and expected baby boy of Acworth, Ga., Shawn and Cindy Smith of Lincoln, Ill., and Brian and Samantha Smith and son, Jason of St. Cloud, Fla.; two brothers, Henry Davis of Lake City, Fla., and Arnold and wife, Joyce Davis, of Washburn; sister-in-law, Dorothy Davis of Concord, Calif.; several nieces and nephews; and many dear friends. A memorial service to celebrate her life was held May 19, at Southside Christian Church, Fort Pierce, Fla. Ministers Jeff Minor; and grandson, Brian Smith officiated. Her family fondly recalled Maurice and Shirley's love of travel to spot the next bear, moose or good place to eat, and teaching grandchildren to play Yahtzee and card games.
