James (Davy) Davey died in a coal mine explosion on 03 May 1887
James (Davy) Davey was born in Cumberland, England.
James was born in 1850 in Whitehaven, Cumberland, England.[1] He was the son of Hugh Davy and Anne Duffy (or Duffey).[2] Their family was lived in Cumberland, England where his father was a coal miner.[3] In 1861, their family lived in Preston Quarter, Cumberland, England.[4] They later lived in Ryhope, Durham, England where James and his father worked as coal miners.[5][6]
He and his brother, William emigrated to America. Looks like they might have made a stop in Sierra, California.[7][8]
His mother, Anne and brothers, John and Joseph also migrated to Canada where they lived in Nanaimo, British Columbia; John and Joseph worked as miners. His sisters, Sarah and Mary also made their homes in British Columbia.
At the age of 36, he was killed in the 1887 Nanaimo Mine Disaster,[9][10] along with his brother, William. He was buried in Saint Peter's Roman Catholic Cemetery in Nanaimo, British Columbia.
