Biography

Henry married Agnes at the Robert Stuart Reserve, Port Augusta West, South Australia. He married Louise Smith at a Church Hall, Whyalla, South Australia.

LATE HENRY JAMES DAW The death which occurred recently of Mr. Henry James Daw, at his residence, Port Augusta West, removes one of the few remaining pioneers of the early transport system which operated in the outback areas until the introduction of camel transport. Born in the Port Augusta West district on July 4, 1866, he, at an early age went on the roads with his father's bullock teams which took him into Queensland and Central Australia, as well as throughout the North West. Often these trips took a year to complete owing to drought conditions existing in the country traversed. At the beginning of 1900 he was attracted to the Tarcoola goldfields which were then booming and this industry was followed both at Tarcoola and Glenloth until about 1908 when he returned to Port Augusta and took up station contract work (mainly fencing) in the North-West. At the beginning of 1912 he took over the management and improvement of Whittata Station for the late Mr. W. H. Greenfield. He remained in this position until 1928, when he returned to Port Augusta and carried out small contract work until about 1935 when he was forced into retirement owing to failing eye sight. Deceased was twice married, first to Miss Agnes Stuart, of Port Augusta West who pre-deceased him by several years. There are four children living of this marriage—Morrice (Whyalla), Dave (Port Augusta West) Jean (Yarna Station) and Lily (Whyalla). The second marriage was to Mrs. Louisa Daniels, of Peterborough, who survives.
