Biography

This Biography was written by Margaret's grandson, Bob Harris (Harris-35484).

Margaret was born September 26, 1854 in St. John's Township, Indiana. She was the second eldest of the nine children born to Jacob Dewald (Dewald-530) and Barbara Bone (Bone-2914). Shortly after her birth her family relocated to Waterville Township in Minnesota. In Waterville her father farmed for a few years and then the family moved into the village of Waterville, Here in the early 1860's her parents became the proprietors of the Waterville House Hotel (sometimes also known as the Dawald Hotel). Doubtless this is where the young Margaret learned the Hotel keeping business that she would herself practice later in life.

She married Joseph Knapp (Knapp-1989) in Le Sueur, Minnesota on April 8, 1876.[1] Shortly thereafter they began living in the home owned by Margaret's parents in Waterville Minnesota, where Joseph worked as a farmer.[2] However, by 1885 they were living on and working their own farm in Waterville.[3] Sometime after 1894, Margaret, Joseph and their growing family of 8 children moved to North Dakota and by 1890 they were living on a farm in Herman North Dakota. Here there last child was born. Then sometime prior to the 1910 US Census they moved to Newark Township South Dakota where they operated a boarding house from a rental home. They continued to operate the boarding house as a business until sometime after the 1920 US Census. Joseph died on January 11, 1929 in Britton, South Dakota. By the time of the 1930 US Census, Margaret was living in her own home in Newark with her bachelor son, Jacob Dawald Knapp (Knapp-7496) who was working as a barber. Margaret died in Newark on December 29, 1937 at the age of 82.
