Emma Maude Dawe was the daughter of William Nicholas Dawe[1] and Catherine Mary Ann Smith.

She was born in the Orange Free State between 1884 and 1890.[2][3][4][5]

She married William George Clack in Port Elizabeth, South Africa on 25 January 1903.[6] It is unclear what became of William George Clack. No death notice has been found, nor have divorce papers been found.

Maud remarried on 26 August 1929 to Archie Sydney Rennie.[3] It is not clear whether Donald Rennie was a child of Archie's from a prior marriage or if he was Maude's child.Donald Rennie, who grew up with Bob Caldwell was always referred to as "Maudie Dawe's adopted son", not as her son.[7]

In the late 30s she lived at 200 Kennedy Street, Turfontein, Johannesburg.[7]and at the time of her death she lived at No. 64 8th Street, La Rochelle, Johannesburg.[4]

Emma Maude died, aged 65, in Johannesburg on 22 June 1950. [4]

Family connections and research notes

Raymond Clack stood as sponsor at the baptism of Norman Sydney William King, son of Doris Eileen and Sydney Joseph George King at Holy Trinity, Turfontein on 15 October 1928.

Alexander Clack is another sponsor, assumed to be related. [8]

Doris King (Edna's sister) adopted Bob Caldwell after the death of Edna Caldwell.[7]

Another relation is D. O. Rennie. He is mentioned on a Magistrate's report as a family member, in relation to Raymond Clack's admission to the Weskoppies institution.[9]. Robert referred to Donald Rennie as Maude Dawe's adopted son.[7] Maude married Archie Rennie on 26 August 1929, but it is not clear if Donald was Maude's son, or Archie's son by an earlier marriage.

According to Bob Caldwell Emma Maud had a sister called "Eady" who lived at Church Street, Turfontein, at the time of Edna Caldwell's death.[7]
