Little is known about his childhood, but William grew up in the Moonta area in a family mostly involved with the mines. However, when he was about 13, an event took place which changed the direction his life was headed. William met a serious accident & an arm needed to be amputated. He could no longer continue working on farms and mining & trained as a teacher.
