David Dawson was likely a resident of Ross County in the Territory Northwest of the River Ohio when Ohio gained statehood in 1803. A secondary source "The County of Ross" claims his sons Isaac and Thomas Dawson were settled in Ross by 1797, with Isaac having first attempted to settle in Kentucky. Isaac Dawson was recorded purchasing lot 192 in the town of Chillicothe by deed dated 12th January 1801.[1] David's daughter Amelia was married in Ross County in January of 1804, his son Zedekiah in 1805. Several of his other children also married in this location during the years that followed.
Record of David's first territorial land purchase is not found. On 13th November 1806, David was issued a patent from the Chillicothe land office stating he'd paid in full for the west half of section 9, township 10, range 20 in Ross County.[2] On 18th May 1808, he and his wife Elizabeth made a deed to his son Zedekiah, selling him 106 acres of this land, and a second deed to son Thomas, selling him another 106 acres of this half-section.[3][4] His son Isaac had been issued a patent for the east half of this section on 15th August 1805.[5] On 1st October 1811, David, as assignee of his son-in-law, James B. Webster, received a patent for the northeast quarter of section 24 in township 11, range 19, which land was deeded to his son David Dawson, Jr.[6][7] All of this land, sold by these deeds, was mentioned in the will of David Dawson.
He was a resident of Ross County when he made his will dated 6th September 1812. He named his wife Elizabeth, his seven sons in birth order, and his seven daughters, likely also in birth order and apparently still living at this date, with none mentioned as deceased. He named his youngest son William Dawson as co-executor, bequeathing to him 2/3rds of the plantation upon which he lived at his death. Letters of Administration were granted to William Dawson on 25th August 1813.[8][9]
