The Mary Harwood House, circa 1825 Fort Hill Road Saturdays, March 14, 21 & 28, April 3 at 9:30 a.m. The Mary Harwood was built on the bluffs of Fort Hill facing the mighty Mississippi River about 1825. In 1862, a large mound of earth was built in front of the house by Confederate soldiers to be used as an ammunition magazine for their cannons in the defense of Vicksburg . Damage from intensive shelling by Union gunboats during the Siege of Vicksburg is visible today in the interior walls of the house.Presentation on the River Defense During the Siege of Vicksburg : The Mary Harwood was strategic in the defense of Vicksburg with a nine-inch Dahlgren cannon positioned in the front of the house, along with a large ammunition magazine. The Union ironclad gunboat, the U.S.S. Cincinnati most likely took a direct hit from a shot fired by the cannon, The Mary Harwood, and the gunboat sank about one half mile north. ___________________________________

Hi Cynthia, Thanks for the further information you have sent on your Harwood family. You asked about Kathleen's birth date: I have noted that I got that information from Jimmie Lee Harwood Cook about 1978. I have some of her other lettters from that year, but I can not locate the one in which she cites Kathleen's birthdate. The 1900 census has 1890, and if you have 1890 from another source I am sure that is correct. I will check for Alphonse Minor's obituary in the New Orleans newspaper when I next go to the library, probably in the next week or so. If I find an obituary I will mail a copy to you. You asked about the Dortch and Carter lines in your e-mail. You are not a Carter descendent, but Rachel Carter Dortch received her maiden name in honor of her Uncle Parsons Carter, who had married her Aunt Mary. Mary and Parsons are the ones who finished raising Rachel and the other orphans after 1809. I feel very close to Rachel C. Dortch Day Harwood as I see her image many times a day as I walk though my house. The painting she had done in Vicksburg hangs proudly in our family room. Rachel stongly resembled my grandmother Lizzie Hicks Perrin at the same stage of life. I have probably told you all this before. We talked via e-mail in 2001, but I can not remember if you have a copy of the 1981 Dortch Family Reference Book, which has over 100 pages on our Dortch family, plus other references. If you do not have a copy of that book, I reprinted a few in 2002 and they are $20 plus $3 postage. I am in the process of revising the Dortch Family History, as I have found lots more information in the past quarter century and of course many people have been born, married died, etc., during that period. I hope to have the "new" Dortch book out next year. I retired about three years ago so the pace of research has greatly increased. I have been issuing a new or revised genealogy every year as well as a volume of local hisory records, and writing articles for local newspaper. Last year I issued a revised Lane genealogy, and the year before that I did a combined Howard, Hunt, and Hicks family history. If you are interested, I would like to mail you draft entries for your more immediate family for your review, and to add information, corrections, etc. If you still reside at 4630 SE 49th Ave., Portland, OR 97206, I can get those entries to you in the next few days. Thanks again for your efforts to preserve your family heritage.

I have the date of death for Alphonse Minor as: Feb. 20, 1942, New Orleans, LA - I would love for you to check on any obituary information from the newspapers for that date Kathleen "Walleen" Harwood died 12/15/1972 in Imperial Beach, San Diego Co, CA and is buried in Glen Abbey Memorial Park in Bonita CA I have visited the cemetery in Bonita - not only Kathleen is buried there but her mother is also there, Jimmie Lee McCown Harwood, who died 11/22/1958 in San Diego, and Kathleen's daughter, Miriam Jeffries Minor Merino who died 5/6/1994 Imperial Beach, CA, her husband, Ernesto Joseph Merino Jr. and their young child, Ernesto Joseph Merino III

As an adopted child, who never knew my family , I am always trying to recover it - I was struck with great awe at the fact that this one cemetery in CA had 4 generations of my family. I have always felt close to Jimmie because she and I were born on the same day, April 6th - As my great great grandmother, I am glad to see that she lived for many decades with her daughter, Kathleen, through so many states.

I have Kathleen's birth date as 5/17/1890 (not 1889) - can you tell me how you got this date? I have probably the same information on Kathleen's siblings (or less): Marie Harwood b. 1886, MS Archie LeRoy Harwood b. 5/28//1889 Charles Peine Harwood b. 3/31/1893 Vicksburg, Warren Co., MS, died 1/5/1954, same - married Maude Thompson and had children: Charles Peine (b. 9/26/1911, Vicksburg, MS), Marie, Elizabeth, Maude, and another child that was still living William B. Harwood b. 11/29/1895, Vicksburg, MS

When I was first trying to find out information about Miriam Minor, I actually called Mr. Charles Peine Harwood (b. 1911), who was still living in Vicksburg, MS - I believe he is now deceased - he told me that Kathleen and Alphonso had moved to California, so I was surprised to see that Alphonso died in New Orleans - but it did give me a clue to look for Kathleen and Miriam there.

My mother still lives in Los Angeles, CA - although she was born in Cincinatti, OH, she lived a good portion of her adult life in CA, which is where both of her parents, Roy Carl Siefert and Miriam Minor, both died - she was so close to where they lived, but never got to know them, and it was only through my research that I was able to reconnect her with the past, as she was an adopted child as well. I have been able to help her meet with her father's family, all 6 hal-brothers and sisters. Miriam had 8 other children, 7 daughters and 1 son (who died young) - it is ironic that my mother was raised as an only child, but the nurse that attended her birth, but in reality had 13 siblings.

Thanks for responding to my e-mail If you have any other information on the Dortch or Carter lines, please let me know Cynthia Drayer cimbid@aol.com

Hi Cynthia, Good to hear from you again. We had spoken about four years ago and exchanged information on the Dortch, Day and Harwood families. I believe your line ran through Kathleen Harwood and Alphonse R. Minor. I will repeat some of the information I have on this family in case there is anything new you do not yet have. Kathleen was born 17 May 1889 in Warren Co., MS. She married 18 May 1911 in Warren Co., to Alphonse (Albert) Rost Minor. Alphonse was born 3 July 1884 in New Orleans, LA, and was one of several children of Francis "Frank" Octave Minor (b. ca. May 1847 in MS, d. 9 Dec. 1915 in New Orleans) and Odile ______ (Madeline M. Louise Odile Larue, b. ca. Sept. 1851 in LA, d. 6 Feb. 1930 in New Orleans). This family was living at 2331 Decatur Street in New Orleans in 1900 and Mr. Minor was working at the U. S. branch mint in New Orleans, which was also located on Decatur Street. (ED 75, p. 140, Orleans Parish). By the summer of 1910 Alphonse R. Minor had moved to Warren County, MS, and was working as a hired hand on Arthur Evans' dairy farm in Beat Four in the county. His name is recorded as Arthur R. Minor. (ED 69, p. 100, Warren Co., MS) Sometime after their marriage Alphonse decided to become a salesman. His occupation is listed as a wholesale commercial trader in 1920 and a hardware salesman in 1930. When the census was conducted in 1930, Alphonse and Kathleen were living in Little Rock, Arkansas. By then they had children: Albert [7], Marion [female, 5], Francis [3 &2/12], and Stephen [11/12]. Also living with them in 1920 was Kathleen's mother J. L. [Jimmie Lee] Harwood, who was listed as being 53 years old, and a widow. (Pulaski CO., AR, ED 119, p. 211-B) By 1930, the family had relocated to New Orleans. Alphonse, Kathleen, and the four children are again listed in the household, but the daughter's name is now listed as Miriam. Mrs. Jimmie Harwood is still listed with Alphonse and Kathleen, so she apprarently lived with the family for many years. (Orleans Parish, LA, ED 108, p. 80) I do not know anything about this family after 1930, except that Alphonse died in Feb. 1942 in New Orleans (Orleans Parish death certificates Vol. 217, No. 1505 &Vol. 218, No. 1191), and what you have previously told me. Alphonse's obituary in 1942 should give some additional information, perhaps on the residence of his children who were all grown by 1942. If you know the exact date of death I can check in the New Orleans papers for the obituary. I do not know why he is listed in the death index with two death certificates. If you have gathered additional information on Kathleeen Harwood's siblings, I would be interested in that. Hoping you are doing well, I am...

Sincerely,

Jim Perrin Ponchatoula, LA

I am a descendant of this couple - I noticed on Roots Web that you added some important information about this family - how are you related? - do you have more information on the carter (and Dortch line), since there seems to be two carters that married into the family? I am descended through Frank(lin) Pete Harwood and Jimmie McCown Mr. Hoot has gotten most of my information and placed it in Roots web Can we share information? Thanks Cynthia Drayer cimbid@aol.com Portland, OR

Cedar Hill Cemetery is one of the oldest and largest cemeteries in the United States that is still in use today. It is also the final resting place for the Confederate Soldiers of the Civil War. A section in the Cedar Hill (Vicksburg City ) Cemetery was set aside to provide a fitting burial place for Confederate soldiers who died of sickness or wounds. Known as "Soldier's Rest," the plot in Cedar Hill Cemetery is the final resting place for an estimated 5,000 Confederate soldiers. We work with both area and outside funeral homes to coordinate burial arrangements. We also keep records of plots, open and close graves, maintain the grounds, assist individuals looking for a particular plot, and handle the real estate transactions dealing with the transfer of plots. Cemetery gates are opened at 7:00 am and closed at dusk. The speed limit of the Cemetery is ten (10) mph. Please drive slower when road conditions are poor and use extreme care at all times. To search our interment database, view our fee schedule or view/download a cemetery map use the "Important Links" to the left. ______________________________ The Cedar Hill Cemetery Map (link at the bottom of this page) has been updated. The map reflects the addition of Division J. The map contains two frames. The smaller map frame displays the location of the cemetery within the City limits with the streets leading to the cemetery. The larger map frame contains the approximate boundaries of the cemetery with entrance gates, divisions, and streets (shown with current street name changes). Also displayed is the location of "Soldiers Rest" memorial site. The City refurbished and installed concrete street signs in the Cemetery. If you are unable to print the map from the link below or would like a larger and/or full color map, you may make an "Open Records Request" through the City Clerk's office located at 1401 Walnut St. The telephone number is 601-634-4553. If you have comments, questions or concerns regarding the Cedar Hill City Cemetery or this map please contact the City's Action Line at 601-636-3411. Currently the City's GIS mapping (geoportal) contains Division J - Square, lot and space descriptions. Future cemetery mapping plans of the City are to add square and lot information for all the Divisions. Last year the City created a map of Division A containing Square and lot information as referenced in the descriptions given by Walter and Annie Salassis' Tombstone records. You may access the Division A map by selecting Cemetery department then tombstone records. The map is linked to the Tombstone Records web page. Future mapping plans include the remainder of the Divisions reflecting the tombstone record descriptions. We hope you enjoy your visit to historic Cedar Hill Cemetery and to the City of Vicksburg . A Find A Grave Virtual Cemetery is essentially a collection of names from the Find A Grave database. As a Find A Grave contributor, you can build Virtual Cemeteries to group listings in whatever way you would like. For example, you might make a 'Smith Family Virtual Cemetery' where you would place all of the members of your Smith family tree. Other examples: 'My Favorite Actors' or 'Memorials I Visit Often'. Be creative!

A VIRTUAL CEMETERY HAS NO RELATION TO A REAL CEMETERY! People listed in your VIRTUAL cemeteries can be buried in many different REAL cemeteries. You can add any name in the Find A Grave database to the Virtual Cemeteries you create. You can choose to make your Virtual Cemeteries visible to the visitors of your Find A Grave contributor page so that others can view the collections you have created. ] fade=[on] fadespeed=[.09]" class="fakeLink"?] Created by: NatalieMaynor <fg.cgi?page=mr&MRid=46770385> Record added: Dec 16, 2006 Find A Grave Memorial# 17044775
