Biography

George DAY.[1][2]

George, the son of Richard Day was born in Newport, Shropshire about 1501 and was educated at Cambridge University graduating MA in 1524. He became Chaplain to Bishop Fisher who went to the block on 22 June 1535 for his opposition to Henry VIII.

Unlike his much younger brother, William, George remained staunchly Catholic throughout the troubles of the period. Appointed Bishop of Chichester in 1543 by 1550 he was being accused of seditious preaching. In December that year he refused to have all the altars in his diocese taken down and replaced with tables and in October 1551 he was deprived and imprisoned in The Fleet. He was released the following year into the keeping of Thomas Goodrich, Bishop of Ely and so remained until the death of King Edward on 6 July 1533.

George was chosen to preach at the King's funeral, which was conducted by Thomas Cranmer, and again at the Coronation of Queen Mary. Formally restored to the Bishopric of Chichester by the Papal legate, Cardinal Pole, on 31 January 1555 he died on 2 August the following year and was buried in his Cathedral.

George DAY born c.1500 Bishop of Chichester (Roman Catholic). His arms have a distinct similarity to the Heraldic badge of the Richmond Herald at Ordinary Arms to the Tudor King Henry VII who was the 2nd Earl of Richmond - George DAY adding his own mark, the Marguerite Daisy or Das-eye alluding to the Surname DAY. In Wales during the Middle Ages, daisies were used to cure insanity, treat smallpox, tumors, jaundice and skin disease. Henry VIII ate Daisies so it is said to help his ulcerated stomach[3]
