Biography

His find a grave record lists 1884, but the tombstone lists 1883.[1]

Days' Gap[2]

Day's Gap is in Lake Norman State Park. It is on State Park Rd, about 100 feet past a road called Loblolly. The state has a gate on the same spot where the Days had a gate over a hundred and seventy five years ago. I thought it was kind of strange that the state put their gate on the exact spot that Lewis Day built his gate back in 1824. Days Gap got it's name from a place on the road that ran through the Day property. The road came up from the Catawba River Bottoms and probably ran into another road that crossed the river at Sherrill's Ford. It is said that the Day family put a gate on this road, probably to keep in livestock...
Lewis Day bought about five hundred acres of land on this location in 1824 and lived there until 1827, when he moved to Back Creek. He sold some of the land to his two sons: David Day and Hanor Day. Hanor lived on this property for fifty eight years, until his death in 1883. One of the old Day houses stood about three hundred yards east of the gate. One of Hanor's daughters, Victoria (who married James M. Loftin) home stood right in the middle of Group Camp Road, about half way to the picnic area. There were two big Elm trees in the front yeard, and later they were on each side of Group Camp Road... I feel there were other Day homes in the area that is called "Days Gap".
Some of the old timers around East Monbo said Days Gap was a favorite spot for hunters. They would park on the ridge at Days Gap and sit and listen for their fox hounds run for miles and the dogs could hear their owners when they hollared (or I believe it is "called"). Days Gap is still a quiet and peaceful spot. Thanks to Duke Power and the State Park System it will be preserved for future generations.
