Biography

Savilla (Dayton) Keller was a Pennsylvanian.

Savilla, daughter of Hezekiah James Dayton and Elizabeth Jane Henry,[1][2] was born 7 December 1870 in Amberson, Fannett Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.[1][2] Her father died in 1875,[3] when she was just four. In 1880 Elizabeth Dayton (age 42) headed the family in Fannett Township that included Ira Savilla (10) and her siblings John (19, tannery worker), Carrie (16), James (14), Susan (12) and Joseph (5).[4]

On 18 September 1894 in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, 22-year-old Savilla married 72-year-old Daniel F. Keller,[1] son of Johann Jacob Keller and Maria Magdalena Leiby.[1] Both were residents of Bear Gap, where he was a farmer, at the time of their wedding.[1] His former wife with whom he had two children, Helena Knoebel, died 17 April 1890.[1]

Savilla and Daniel had two children and adopted a son (Archie McC. Davis):

  • Fortunata Keller (b. 6 January 1895;[5] m. David L Smith;[6] d. 10 June 1938).[6]
  • Emmert Dennie Keller (b. 12 December 1899;[7][8] d. 6 March 1926).[8]

The couple settled on Daniel's farm in Ralpho Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, where in 1900 the household included Daniel (age 79), Savilla (30, mother of four, three living), their children Fortunata (5) and Emmert D. (1) and their adopted son Archie McC. Davis (7).[9]

Her husband died in 1902.[10] Records for the years after his death have not been located, but she appears to have moved to Iowa. Her daughter Fortunata died in June 1838. It must have been difficult to survive a child.[6]

Savilla died from uterine cancer at age 67 on 10 August 1938 in Davenport, Scott County, Iowa.[2] She was buried at Shamokin, Pennsylvania.[2]

Research Notes

  • Although her marriage record to Daniel shows that she was not previously married, there is a record of a Savilla Dayton marrying Mr. Hamme in 1892 (two years before Daniel).
