Biography

John was born 8 April 1853 in Hardy County, Virginia.[1] He was the son of David Dayton and Phebe Bosely. For most of his adult life, John went by the name John C. Dayton.

He married Charlotte Hill on 19 April 1874 in Rosbys Rock, Marshall County, in a ceremony performed by L. N. Pickens.[2]

John died on 1 June 1917 in Cumberland Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania,[3] and he is buried in the Hewitts Cemetery in Rices Landing.[4]

  1. John's death certificate states that he was born 8 April 1850 in West Virginia to David Dayton and "Feeby Bausley." The informant was his son, Joe E. Dayton. The year is probably incorrect. John's marriage record implies that he was born circa 1853 and provides his county of birth. The 1860 census confirms the age in the marriage record.
