John DeHart Jr was born in Appalachia, in North Carolina.

John was born in 1838. He was the son of John Dehart and Jane Roberts. He passed away in 1864. John was killed in an ambush between New Berne and Kinston, NC, in June 1864.[1]

Lt. John Harvey DeHart died in an ambush in Kinston, NC. One account reads: "Arriving at Kinston early in the Spring of 1864, the regiment began picketing the outposts in front of New Bern and other points on the coast of North Carolina covering a line about fifty (50) miles long. During the time we had various engagements with bodies of the enemy. One of these conflicts was at Heath's Mills [one source says Jackson's Mills, another source says Cobb's Mills], where we captured a number of the Federals. Col. George N. Folk was cut off from the command and captured in a night attack at this place. In this attack 1st Lt. William W. Kilpatrick and 3rd Lt. John H. DeHart were killed; two (2) brave officers falling at the post of duty. Col. Folk was released after a few months' confinement in several of the Northern prisons, and he rejoined his command at Kinston in late December of 1864."[2] See also The Weekly Standard account of the ambush.[3]
