Douglas was born in 1911. He passed away in 1940.
Douglas Hazen DeLong's birth mother was Sarah DeLong (1893-1966). Hazen was likely born out of wedlock as his mother soon married George Reeleder and they had 13 more children. Sarah's parents (Hazen's grandparents) were Arthur W. DeLong & Eliza Margaret (Kirk) DeLong. Hazen's birth was not registered until Mar. 10, 1938 (see birth record) which lists his assumed grandparents as his parents to give further credence to the aforementioned. Hazen was likely raised by Arthur & Eliza.
HAZEN DeLONG -"Hazen" DeLONG graduated from Teacher's College and taught one year in the one-room schoolhouse at Maplewood. The board decided he wasn't strict enough and he taugh "frills" (i.e., music) instead of concentrating on "important subjects", so his contract was not renewed. The writer's mother learned to play the violin in this one year and still plays on occasion. When she won a spelling contest, Hazen gave her an 1845 2-cent penny from the "Banque du Bas Canada", i.e., Lower Canada (Quebec). When he left Maplewood, Hazen continued his education. He never married.
