Biography

Sohn von Paulus DEMUTH, 33, Weingärtner und Anna DEMUTH, (AN) (by Annette Suzette Voosen on 2017-07-07) Peter K. DeMuth was born in Ehnen, Luxembourg. Baptismal sponsors were Peter Demuth and Maria Neuman.

Lore (from Fr. Paul DeMuth) is that Peter K had a fight with his twin brother--for which there is no record--on the pier and knocked him down. Peter K got on the boat and never heard from his brother again.

He married his first wife, Anna Meckel, in 1851, before sailing to America (a two-month journey). She became ill at sea, and died before the ship docked. (They may or may not have had one or two children at the time.)

He came to the USA with his cousin Mathias Demuth and wife Barbara Punnell in February 1854. Apparently Anna Meckel and their two girls died at sea.

Peter then returned to Luxembourg, where he later married Anna Dominic. They came to America, where they purchased a farm near Hollandale, Wisconsin. Peter and Anna had two daughters, Elizabeth and Mary. When Elizabeth was about three years old, and Mary an infant, their father uprooted some wild parsnip. Thinking it edible, he brought it home to be prepared for their meal. Anna cooked and tasted it, and gave some to Elizabeth. By the time Peter returned, Elizabeth was dead and his wife was dying.

Peter then married Margaret Kinn. Together they had 10 children.

Peter was a Supervisor on the township board of Moscow township in Iowa County Wisconsin for the years of 1876 to 1880. In a book, "History of Early Pioneers," it says "P.K. DeMuth was a progressive farmer acquiring a goodly store of wealth."

In 1880 Peter and his family lived in Moscow, Iowa County, Wisconsin, USA where he farmed. The household comprised:

  • P K Demuth Self Male 59 Luxembourg

  • John Demuth Son Male 22 Wisconsin, United States
