Biography

William DePriest served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: 1862
Side: CSA
Regiment(s): 2nd Virginia Cavalry

William Henry DePriest was born about 1830 to Turpin DePriest and Martha Wood.

William's parents were wed on May 29, 1811, and his father was a veteran of the War of 1812, as sourced in profile of father TURPIN DePRIEST.

Father Turpin cited as head of house in 1820 census of Lynchburg, and again in 1830 record for Campbell County, Virginia. In the 1830 record, it was shown there were 5 boys, 2 girls.

The 1840 census of North East Campbell would reflect father Turpin's passing by showing mother Martha as head of the house.

In 1850, William Henry DePriest and two of his brothers, LaFayette and Turpin Jr. were living with mother Martha in Campbell, Virginia.

William Henry DePriest would marry Cassandra Elizabeth Williams on October 3, 1850 in Campbell, Virginia.

The 1860 record for Western Campbell, Virginia would show the couple had 5 children by that time. At the same time, brother Turpin was living with mother Martha, not far away.

William H. DePriest would enlist in the CSA in 1862, joining brother Turpin DePriest in the 2nd Virginia Cavalry, Company I. Four of wife Cassandra's brothers were in Company I as well.

William Henry DePriest unfortunately was killed in the battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse on May 8, 1864.

The census of 1870 for Eastern Campbell would show that he had fathered two more children since the 1860 record. Wife Cassandra "Bettie" DePriest is shown with their children:

  1. Maria 1853
  2. Robert W. 1855
  3. Matilda T 1857
  4. Martha 1859
  5. Lewis 1860
  6. Cornelia W. 1862
  7. Virginia 1864

(Lewis was actually estimated as 1862 by the 1870 census, however, he was in the 1860 census, so that's an error. William is noted as being granted leave in May and June of 1863, which would explain daughter Virginia, born 1864.)
