Biography

John Herrod DeWitt was the son of Peter and Jane Brey DeWitt, Senior. John Herrod DeWitt, born 12-9-1785 in Clark County, Kentucky and emigrated to Ross County, Ohioi 1796. He purchased 1000 acres on Turkey Run, now Wayne Township in Fayette County, Ohio. He built the first cabin in the County and that cabin served as a headquarters for Governor McArthur, Massie, Douglas, Creighton, Clay, Crittendon, and other notable men of the area.

Where John DeWitte once lived is an earthwork, one of the Ohio mounds, that is about 100 feet high. On the east side of his property is the oldest cemetery in the county donated to the public by John DeWitte, Esq.

John married Mary Polly Barker on 11 Apr 1808 in Ross County, Ohio and they had 10 children:
