Captain Green DeWitt served for Missouri Territory in the War of 1812
Service started: October 1812
Unit(s):
Service ended: 1815

Green DeWitt was born in Lincoln County, Kentucky, but moved when young to Missouri Territory. Parents were Walter and Sarah DeWitt. Green attended school in both Kentucky and Missouri. [1][2]

Marriage: Sarah Seely,15 Dec 1808 in St. Louis County, Missouri. Sarah (b 1787) was daughter of Jonas Seely. Children: Naomi, Naomi Q., Eveline, Christopher Columbus and Clinton Edward and Minerva.[2]

He served in War of 1812 as Sergeant in the Infantry of the Missouri Territory under Capt. John E. Allen and Lt. Colonel Dodge. He achieved the rank of Captain.[1]

Green lived in St. Louis and Ralls counties of Missouri where he was appointed sheriff in 1821. This was a new county at that time. [3] While in any settlement, he encouraged settlers to join him in Texas. Since both Stephen F Austin and father, Moses were from Missouri, [1]Green probably knew them.

1824,- Empresario - DeWitt went to the capital Saltillo of Coahuila and Texas and was awarded a grant on April 15, 1825 to settle 400 colonists on the Guadalupe River. (DeWitt's Colony. [4] This would be the DeWitt Colony that contributed men to the "Gonzales 32". [1] These men went to the aid of the defenders of the Alamo and were also killed in the Battle of the Alamo.[1]

1825 - After receiving the grant, DeWitt hired James Kerr to be the surveyor. Kerr placed the capital, called Gonzales after Rafael Gonzales, provisional governor of Coahuila y Tejas, at the confluence of the San Marcos and Guadalupe Rivers. [2]The first settlers arrived in the summer of 1825. DeWitt visited in October, but spent much of 1825 in Missouri recruiting settlers for the Colony. [5]

1826 - Green DeWitt, Sarah and family arrived in Texas. Green Dewitt is considered the second most important empresario (Stephen F Austin was first).[1] DeWitt's personal political and military impact on the development of Texas culminating with independence in 1836 was apparently much less than some of the impresarios. [2]One reason being: Green Dewitt died before the Revolution. His name is mentioned in Texas General Land Office frequently. He appeared not to take an active part in the political leadership of the area other than in security matters related to Indian raids as opposed to Stephen F Austin. There are not as many records of DeWitt using of his empresario authority other than minor details. [1][2]

Green DeWitt died 18 May 1835, probably of cholera, while seeking control of more land for speculation in Monclova, Mexico. He was buried in an unmarked grave. A memorial to the Empresario has been erected in the DeWitt Cemetery in Gonzales County. [6] His widow, Sarah Seely DeWitt died on 24 Nov 1854 in Gonzales and is buried there, as are numerous descendants, in the DeWitt Cemetery near Gonzales.

Legacy
