Biography

Birth

Mable M. DeWitt was born on 11 May 1881. She was the daughter of Moses O. and Martha Harriet [Doane] DeWitt. She was the oldest of six children to survive to adulthood (there were four (4).

Childhood/Education

Other than a rural upbringing, nothing is known regarding her early childhood or her level of education.

Marriage/Children

Elmer and Mable Hause

Mable May was married twice. On 20 Sep 1899, she first married Elmer G. Hause ^[1] in Leroy, Ingham, Michigan and she gave birth to two (2) children; Glenn W. in 1900 and Ethel Mae in 1904. After Elmer's death, she married second, Luther Pierson on 16 Nov 1908. ^[2] This marriage also produced two children, a son Earl and a daughter Gladys. ^[3]

Adult Life

Mable May led a tough life. It was a very rural farm setting that she lived in. The rundown, unpainted old farmhouse that she lived in - in Clinton County, Michigan had no indoor plumbing other than a "pitcher pump" off a back stoop which most likely drew water from a cistern located beneath the house. Later she had an a outside faucet but nothing that serviced the interior of the house. She lived alone taking care of herself after the death of her second husband Luther and until her death in 1974. She used a "back house" year 'round her whole life. She maintained a garden and raised chickens for the meat and the eggs for her personal use and of which to sell. What made this even tougher was that she was badly crippled and had no use of one arm. ^[4]

Mable Mae Pierson died on 11 Apr 1974 at the age of 92 in Meridian Twp., Ingham, Lansing, Michigan. ^[5] She was buried in the Reed Cemetery, Victor, Clinton, Michigan next to her second husband, Luther Pierson.
