DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships by comparing test results with John or other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA. Y-chromosome DNA test-takers in his direct paternal line on WikiTree:
  • John DeWitt: Family Tree DNA Y-DNA Test 700 markers, haplogroup R-FT350034, FTDNA kit #933943, MitoYDNA ID T17722 [compare]

Hi, John!

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand Pre-1700 Profiles. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines on that page.

Congratulations!

This week we have your last stop on the guided tour. Hopefully, you're feeling like a WikiTree pro! If not, you can always revisit the tour stops via the comment boxes on the right side of your profile.

You've covered a lot of ground the past few weeks. Today, we want to give you just a few more tools that can take you even deeper into the WikiTree forest without getting lost: How to Dig a Little Deeper.

Please do not hesitate to ask questions! If the above link does not work from your email, please go to your profile in the public comments and it will work from there.

Thanks, WikiMesssenger Cindy

Hello

You may have been hard at work getting connected to family members who are already here and adding those who were missing. You probably have at least a few profiles that you manage now.

There's a fast and easy way to access those profiles using the Watchlist. So, this week we're going to look at How to Manage Your Watchlist.

Questions? Just ask in the comment section of my page. We want to help!

You've been a WikiTreer for several weeks now! We hope your profiles are starting to come together and that you've enjoyed getting to know all of us a little better.

You are probably getting a good feel for the collaborative nature of WikiTree by now. Since collaboration isn't always easy, we've put together a few pointers that can make working in this type of environment a little easier: How to be a Successful WikiTreer.

I'm always happy to answer questions!

Hi John --

It's time for your next stop on the guided tour!

This week, we'd like to show you How to Join in the Community. There's no shortage of opportunities to get involved through social media, our forum, and projects.

Be sure to check out the One Name Studies Project to see if anyone has started a project for one of the surnames in your family. Don't see one? Follow the instructions for starting your own!

Please let me know if you have questions. :-)

Shirley, WikiMessenger

Hello there!

Our next stop will give you some pointers on how to make your profiles stand out: How to Edit a Profile.

As always, your questions are welcome!

Hi John,

Thanks for joining us! I’m David, a WikiTree Mentor. Hope you're enjoying our site.

Did you have fun learning your way around WikiTree yesterday?

I would be happy to answer any questions you might have after working through; How To Start Climbing Our Tree.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Hi John!

What a coincidence! My husband's grandmother was also a Harris and our last name is DeWitt! His grandmother's Harris roots go back with 7 generations of Daniel Harris men to Greensport, New York so far. There is another DeWitt family from our area with a son named John and he is around our son's age (son turns 35 this month). We live in SE Washington State. We have yet to do the dna testing so this ought to be interesting to say the least! Welcome to WikiTree! Lori Jo DeWitt

Thank you for volunteering! I am pleased to confirm your membership to WikiTree.

As we've said, WikiTree is quite different from other genealogy sites. So, we've put together a guided tour to help you learn how to use it. Your first stop is How to Start Climbing Our Tree. Next week, you'll get another message with your next stop on the guided tour.

You can also meet some of us in the G2G forum. Feel free to jump in, introduce yourself, and answer our Question Of The Week: Have you found any ancestors who participated in the American Revolution?

Tomorrow, you'll hear from a Mentor who will check in to see how you're doing and answer any questions you might have.

Vicky

Hi John,

I noticed you are trying to merge this profile with John DeWitt who married in November 3, 1675 in NY.

This profile is supposed to be for you - a living person. Unless you are the John DeWitt who married Catherine VanCortlandt, you should not merge this profile into a dead person's profile.

Maryann
