James was born about 1851 in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.[1]

He received his education in Wolfville at Horton Academy and Acadia University graduating on 1885.

Biography Continued

J.E. along with Edward McLennan, clerks in the firm of TAS DeWolf and Son, at the time of the death of Charles F. DeWolf, took the business over from him, who had been running it since the death of T.A.S.[3][4]

In 1890-1894 was a member of the Halifax NS Bd. of Trade.[5][6]

The 1891 Cdn census lists James E as a 40 (1851) yr old NS born Methodist commission merchant viv @ Bedford NS.[7]

By 1899 shipping agent for the Beaver Line @ Halifax NS.[8]

By 1899 the Halifax Harbour signal flag for TAS DeWolf & Son was red and white flag, red uppermost, with a red and white ball in centre, the red half on the white, and the white half on the red.[9]

He was one of fifteen reps from the Halifax Bd of Trade @ the 1900 Maritime Provs. Bd of Trade meeting where he felt insurance rates charged by the British (double American rates) were discriminatory against Maritime Cdn ports and deemed it necessary that they keep up the agitation until lower rates were achieved. In the discussion on municipal ownership of electric production, he would support a clause to fix compensation by arbitration of invested capital in its private ownership.

He considered tourism an important question and of concern to Maritime businessmen.[11]By 1939 the Nova Scotia government supported a Tourist Hotel Short Course for people who were interested in operating tourist homes (B & Bs) as a business either in their homes or as an independent business.[12]

On two occasions when motions for transport subsidies were tabled he asked if they were needed and what statistics could be provided in support thereof. He moved a reform resolution involving the boards executive.[13]

The 1901 Cdn census lists JE as a 43 yr old (1858) NS born widower French Cdn Methodist merchant[14]

The 1911 Cdn census lists James as a 60 yr old NS born English Cdn Methodist widower merchant viv @ Bedford NS.[15]

In 1912 he was a petitioner for the incorporation of the NS Game Society (a group to aid & in securing the enactment & enforcement of laws, regulations for the protection of land game, of the river fisheries & to do all things reasonably incidental to that end.) Also known as the Game & Inland Fisheries Protection Society of NS[16]

The 1931 Canadian census lists James Edward as an 80 yr old, Nova Scotia born, English-Cdn, United Church of Canada adherent, senior partner of a shipping agency, living in Bedford, NS.[17]

By 1933, he had retired from the firm of TAS DeWolf and Son.[18]

James E. Dewolf Sr died on 11 Apr 1936[19]
