It is most unlikely that Hugh's LNAB was Clayton or de Clayton. The family's connection with the name Clayton appears to be as a result of Hugh's son Robert being awarded the Manor of Clayton in Lancashire after the Conquest in 1066. Hugh's surname would probably have been a reference to the location of his birth or home in Normandy, and appears now to be lost.
