Charles Eugène was born in 1858 in Strasbourg. He was the son of Joseph François Edouard de Foucauld and Marie Elisabeth Beaudet de Morlet. [1] He was brought up by his grandfather Colonel Beaudet de Morlet, because his parents died when he was six years old. [2]
He integrated the military school of Saint-Cyr, then joined the School of cavalry of Saumur. At twenty-three, he left to explore Morocco. The quality of his work earned him the gold medal of the Geographical Society and great renown following the publication of his book "Reconnaissance au Maroc". Back in France, he found the Christian faith and became a monk among the Trappists on 16 January 1890, then he left for Syria. He became a hermit. [3]
He was ordained a priest at Viviers in 1901 and moved to the Algerian Sahara at Béni-Abbès. He studied the culture of the Tuaregs for more than twelve years, publishing the first Tuareg-French dictionary. [3]
On 1 December 1916, Charles Eugène was assassinated at the door of his hermitage. [4] He was then considered a martyr and was the object of true veneration. [3]
He was declared "venerable" on 24 April 2001 by Pope John Paul II, then "bienheureux" (Blessed) on 13 November 2005 by Pope Benedict XVI. Pope Francis signed on 27 May 2020 the decree recognizing a miracle attributed to the Blessed, opening the door to an upcoming canonization. He was canonized on 15 May 2022. [3]
