Biography

Father Hugh de Neville, Chief Forester & Justice of the King's Forest in England, Sheriff of Essex & Hertfordshire[1] b. c 1170, d. c 21 Jul 1234

Mother Joan de Cornhill[2] d. a 9 May 1225

Sir John de Neville, Chief Forester & Justice of the King's Forest in England, was born before 1213 at of Wethersfield, Essex, England.[3]

He married Hawisia de Courtenay, daughter of Sir Robert de Courtenay, Baron Oakhampton and Mary de Vernon, in 1230; They had 2 sons (Sir Hugh; & John) & 1 daughter (Joan, wife of Sir Henry de la Mare, & of Sir Walter de la Hyde).[4][5]

In 1234, before his father's death, he fined to have the bailiwick of the King's Forest in Oxon, Northants, Bucks, and Hunts for life, and, after his father's death, did homage, 21 July. On 21 October 1235 he was appointed Chief Forester and justice of the whole of the King's Forest through England, a position he held until 1244. He was one of the English notables who sailed with Richard, Earl of Cornwall, for Palestine from Marseilles in 1240. After his return to England he was so rapacious and oppressive in the execution of his office that, upon evidence obtained by commission, he escaped prison only by a very heavy fine.

He retired in disgrace to Wethersfield, where he died soon afterwards. Sir John de Neville, Chief Forester & Justice of the King's Forest in England died circa 8 June 1246; Buried at Waltham Abbey, Essex.[6]

You are correct Liz - that is not an appropriate title. I deleted it - the information is correctly noted in the biography.

this profile has a reported database error (because of the "&" in Other Last Name):

791 Separators in Last Name Other

However... as I understand EuroAristo naming guidelines, "job titles" shouldn't be in [any] name field. Isn't Forester a job title? Maybe "Justice of the King's Forest" too?

If the titles in the OLN are correct, I think we can select false error? I'm not sure why "&" is not allowed, but I can look into it if both "Chief Forester" & "Justice of the King's Forest in England" are appropriately included in OLN.

Let me know please.

Thanks!
