Biography

Mensje was born in 1741. She passed away in 1812 after falling down on the road, while travelling to the fair of Werkendam with her husband.

Research Note

She is mentioned to be born in 1747 in the 1812 Andel census register, but this cannot be true. No baptism in the year 1747 in Willige Langerak is found for a Mensje de Pater, even though the baptism registration is clearly complete without any hiatus. In the surrounding years 3 baptisms for a child named Mensje de Pater are present, the one in 1741 must be the correct one based on the fact that Mensje had a daughter named Volkje, clearly named after her mother. The other baptisms are in the years 1743 and 1759. For the child baptised in 1743 the parents were Hendrik de Pater and Aaltie Verhoogh (and again a Mensje de Pater is witness, most likely she was the grandmother of both this child and the child baptised in 1741). For the child baptised in 1759 the parents were Jan de Pater and Theuntie Suijdam. Note also that the birth years mentioned in these 1812 census registers are notoriously unreliable, especially for the illiterate people. They often just did not know their birth date or even their birth year, and had no access to some family notes, i.e. in a family bible or such to remember these facts.
