John Burgh was the son of Richard de Richmond and his wife, Elizabeth Burgh, the daughter and heir of William Burgh.[1] He was known by his mother's last name, Burgh.[1] John's grandfather, William de Burgh, was the principal tenant in 1301 of Burgh manor (as it was known until the 17th century, now known as Brough) in Catterick Parish, York North Riding, England.[2]
Between 3 September,1386, and 11 January, 1387, when John de Burges or Burgh was called to testify for Grosvenor in the historic contest in the Court of Chivalry between Sir Richard Scrope and Sir Robert Grosvenor, John was aged 41 and more.[3]
John may have had a brother, Thomas Burgh, Vicar of Catterick, 1399.[1]
John married Catherine Aske, daughter of Roger Aske.[1]
John and Catherine had children:
John died on 10 January,1412, and was buried in our Lady's Porch in Catterick Church.[1]
Catherine was living in 1413.[1]
John and Catherine, their son William and Matilda his wife, are commemorated by monumental brasses in the North Aisle in the Chantries or Porches of Our Lady or St James.[1]
