Biography

Leopold was born in 1816. Leopold De Salis ... He passed away in 1898.

Death of Mr. DeSalis. On Saturday evening, there died at Tharwa one of the old politicians and residents of Qeanbeyan, Mr Leopold Fane DeSalis, at the age of 82. Everyone is familiar with the man who has been almost the pioneer of that part of the district. Mr DeSalis was a titled gentleman, but on coming to Australia he dropped the title.

For many years be was a prominent politician and represented Queanheyan in the Legislative Assembly. His influence was such that his son, George DeSalis, was also elected as a member for this district. He possessed a good deal of ability and always displayed considerable public spirit. He was for many years a member of the Legislative Council, which position he resigned some months ago on account of his failing health.

The lately deceased Leopold Fane DeSalis was a son of Jerome, Count DeSalis, and was born in 1816. His grandfather, Peter, was a Captain in the Coldstream Guards. His father assumed, by royal license, the additional name of Fane, in accordance with the will of his grandmother, Mary, Countess DeSalis, (and sister to Charles. the last Viscount Fane) All the members of this family are hereditary Knights of the Golden Spur, Counts of the Germanic Empire, and Counts Palatine of the Palace of the Lateran. In 1844 Mr Leopold Fans DeSalis married Charlotte daughter of Captain McDonald Morar of the 68th regiment. His wife died some time ago and Count DeSalia was buried beside her at Tharwa. There are three sons left living, Leopold William Fane D Salis, Fleurs, N.S.W., George Fane DeSalis Tharwa, and Henry Ginhert McDonald Fane DeSalis, Strathmore, Queensland. There is only one daughter left, Mrs Farrer, of Tambrigg, Tharwa. [1]
