Dave was born in South Burnie in 1908. He was brought up at the Fourteen Mile, Highclere, where his father Tim had a cattle grazing property and a butchery business, and also grazed cattle on his Tewkesbury/ St Marys Plains property. Dave moved to Moorville Road, Ridgely about 1911.His parents' marriages ended and Dave lived at 16 Abbott Street, Upper Burnie from late 1913.

On leaving school at age 13, Dave worked with his brother-in-law Charlie Broad, loading floats (carts with lowered centre sections), with furniture and timber. Dave travelled to Queensland looking for work with his brother Ernie. On the way, they worked in a Hunter Valley mine where Dave's brother Ted was an engineer, controlling the mineshaft lift.

Dave and Ernie returned from Queensland to build houses for WW1 veterans around the Victoria countryside. On returning from country Victoria to his Essenson barding house, his landlady showed him an advertisement for work at Casterton, building a schoolhouse at Waratah (sic. Warrock?) Station.

Dave met Margaret Blair in Casterton. The depression was at its peak. Dave sought work in Tasmania. He married Margaret in Tasmania in 1930.

David enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force in Mortlake on 8 Oct 1942 as # 119328 Carpenter Rigger (a “wood butcher”, who worked on wooden airframes). He served in Mount Gambier and Bundaberg and was promoted to Leading Aircraftman and Acting Sergeant. His last posting was 2 Air Observor School, Mount Gambier. He was discharged 20 Aug 1945. David was awarded the War Medal 1939-1945 and Australia Service Medal 1939-1945.

Brother David Deacon, builder of Blackburn, joined Burwood Lodge No. 527 on 11 Sep 1952 as an Entered Apprentice Freemason. Fellowcraft Freemason on 9 Oct 1952. Master Mason on 12 Feb 1953. Resigned on 22 Mar 1963.

Dave built a War Service Home for his brother in law, Colin Blair, in Petrie St., Casterton. He built another home in Carmichael St in which Debbie Cain lived in the 1990s, followed by her Munro cousins. Dave built a home at “The Woolshed”, Doughboy Rd., Strathdownie for Jim & Val Cain in 1958.

Enter a personal reminiscence or story.
The revisionist “cleansing” of founding father John Deacon and wife Honora McCarthy of convict origins and Honora if her Irish origins has a later echo. Their grandson David (“Dave”) Deacon was friends with a Catholic girl in Burnie. Dave’s English mother would not allow Dave to have a Catholic girlfriend. This was 1920’s.
