Biography

John was christened 15 Nov 1812, Streatley, Bedfordshire, not far from Deacon Hill at the northern end of the Chiltern Hills. Married Sarah Steers 20 Oct 1834 Sundon, Beds. 1841 Cencus has John Daacon, 25; Sarah Daacon, 24; Elizh Daacon, 5; and Edith Daacon, 3; all living in Luton, Bedfordshire. The unusual spelling possibly indicates how the name was pronounced.

Sarah died 1845. John embarked 18 Apr 1846 per “Palmyra” from London. Arrived 23 Aug 1846, Hobart, Tasmania. Had three daughters with Sarah. Married 2nd wife Honora McCarthy 9 Dec 1851, Jerusalem (now Colebrook).

From 1856 to 1866 his father John rented a farm in Lower Jerusalem, where Timothy was born. John took a 14 year lease of land in Native Corners on 1 Jan 1867, where the family moved.

Αbout 1877, the family left Native Corners. They boarded the steam train at Danby Siding for Hobart, then made their way by various means to Emu Bay, thence to Hampshire Hills, where John rented a cottage and land from late 1877 or early 1878. In late 1880, John leased and ran the Hampshire Hills Hotel at a railway siding on the Emu Bay railway, and a nearby cottage. He passed away 8 May 1888 at Romaine, Tasmania.
