Biography

George Deal was born in either 1762 or Jun 15, 1772 in Rowan County, Colonial North Carolina. The Catawba RIver Valley in Rowan County became Burke County in 1777. In 1782, part of Burke County was annexed to Lincoln County. In 1842, the upper part of Lincoln County became Catawba County. George's parents were Jacob Diehl, Sr. (1743-1812) and Margaret Ikert/Ikard/Iker (1754-1850). He married Mary Bowman (1778-1850) in about 1796 in Lincoln County.

George Deal and wife Mary "Polly" Bowman Deal were living with their son Jonas Deal in 1850.[1]

Mary died in 1850,[2] and George died about 1853 in Catawba County.[3]

Rev Crouse's Account

According to Rev. Crouse's account of the family in 1905 from one of Mary Bowman's grandsons:[4]:

"Mary was the youngest child. We have been furnished some information about her descendancy by one of her grandsons, Mr. Reuben E. Deal, of Hickory, N.C. ..... He said that George Deal came from Germany (sic). He says that George Deal's father, Jacob Diehl, came from Germany to Pennsylvania, and then to North Carolina, and settled about 175 yards east of the old Catawba Cotton Mill, at Newton, N.C. Of course there was neither cotton mill nor town there then, but Mr. Deal owned a large body of land. He married a woman by the name of Ikard, but whether they were married before they came here, our informant does not know. A family of Ikards living not far from Newton are her relatives. He raised his family where he settled. We have been concerned about only two of his children because they married Bowmans. Susan married Samuel Bowman as already stated and detailed on pages 76-92."
"George married Mary Bowman, and settled about a mile and a half east of the present town of Newton. There they lived, raised their children, and died. They are buried at St. Paul's church. They belonged to the Reformed church, but many of their descendants are Lutherans now."

Deal,or Diehl-18 and Deal-894 appear to represent the same person because: These appear to be duplicates of the same man married to Mary Bowman. DIEHL may be the correct original spelling of this surname but no sources quoted to support this. Perhaps the PMs can confirm this when they approve the merger? Thanks.
