Biography

Luke Dean, son of James Dean and Abigail Barker, was born on 17 or 18 June 1789 in Marlborough, Cheshire County, New Hampshire.

Luke's grandfather, William Barker, was the first settler in Marlborough. In September 1814 Luke served in the military during the War of 1812. His brother, John Dean, served from April 1813 to April 1814 as a fifer.

On 12 January 1815, Luke wed Mary A. Thomas in Pittsford, Rutland County, Vermont. They had five children, the eldest four born in Pittsford, the fifth born in Hubbardton, Vermont, just west of PIttsford:

  1. Mary Adeline Dean;
  2. William Franklin Dean;
  3. Mason Stillman Dean;
  4. Zebina Thomas Dean;
  5. James Alexander Dean.
Sometime between 1820 and 1827, Luke Dean's family, along with his mother and most of his siblings, moved from Pittsford, Vermont to De Peyster, St. Lawrence County, New York. De Peyster was first settled in November 1802. The first town meeting was held on 3 May 1825. Here it was voted on to raise a subscription for a town house and church, and a committee of three, consisting of Smith Stilwell, Nathan Dean (Luke's brother), and Phipo Hurlvert. On 23 October 1827, Luke Dean, along with others, was named as the first trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church of De Peyster.
In 1850 we find Luke Dean and his wife living in Lisbon, St. Lawrence Co., New York. The census record lists his occupation as Methodist Episcopal clergyman. Luke's son, Dr. William Franklin Dean is living with his wife and three children in Milan, Erie, Ohio in 1850. The census record lists his occupation as Physician. Also living with Dr. William Dean are his two brothers, M. S. Dean, and Z. Thomas Dean. The record lists the occupation of M.S. Dean as Dentist and that of Z. Thomas Dean as Physician. In 1875 M. S. Dean took a trip to Europe. On his passport, it listed him as about 5 foot seven with light, sandy hair and blue eyes. This is the same year that his brother, Rev. James Alexander Dean, applied for a passport to visit several European countries, so it is reasonable to assume that they travelled together. James was also listed as being 5 foot six inches with greyish blue eyes and sandy hair. [1]

Luke Dean died at eighty-five years of age on 18 December 1874 in Connecticut, [2] and was buried at Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic, New London County, Connecticut. [3] [4]
