I have also seen a birth date for Howard listed as 29, Aug. 1912 in the Snodgrass Book on the internet for Owen Co., Indiana Note: The Gosport Reporter newspaper in 1928, probably Spring, lists the High School Basketball team with photo. Included are Howard Dean (guard) and Ralph Caviness (utility). Note: Gosport Reporter newspaper Dec 7, 1928 Howard and Raymond Dean are on the sick list Second piece as follows: The local high school team was scheduled to play the fast Stinesville quintet on this date, but owing to the fact that the local schools have been closed this week and there is a health officer taboo on public gatherings operative until midnight tonight, the management was forced to postpone the Stinesville game.... Practically all players in the Gosport squad have been down with colds and lagrippe during the past ten days, but a sufficient number have recovered to have made it possible to play this game if the closing order was not in effect.

Since I am now living in Owen Co., IN I have had occasion to meet others who remember Howard. A story recently shared was that Howard was a successful tavern owner on the courthouse square in Spencer, IN for many years. It sounds like it was also a family friendly establishment. Howard regularly ordered fresh Oysters to be air shipped for his tavern menu. An additional story from the same man, husband of Sue Carpenter, Montgomery Township, Owen County trustee, stated Howard had a rowdy drunk in the tavern one night. After unsuccessful repeated attempts to get the customer to quiet down, Howard cold-cocked him, called the police to pick him up an remove him. Though I only remember meeting Howard a couple times, he always struck me as a quiet and gentle man. At the sale of Howard's estate, my father bought a round quarter sawn oak table capable of expanding with two leaves. Howard had covered the top with linoleum and used it as a card table. At the present time, I seem to be missing paper documentation for the following story. To the best of my memory it goes like this. Basketball in Indiana is a serious, competitive sport. Rivalries between schools and towns are sometimes intense. From what I remember Howard was in attendance at a basketball game in Eminence, IN, and he and others mixed-it-up with locals after the game. I will try to locate my paper source for this story.
