Morgan was born in 1825 in Rockingham, Virginia. He was the son of James Dean and his second wife Sarah Monger. On 27 Oct 1848 he married Susanah "Susan" Lurena Breeden (1825-1915; d/o Jonathan Breeden and Nancy Meadows). They had approx. 13 children. Living in Rockingham throughout his life, it is here he died in 1908. He is buried at the Dean Family Cemetery located in what is now the Shenandoah National Park.
