Edgar Dean was born 28 Jun 1859 in Marshall, Michigan during the time his father was working in the railroad shop. He grew up in Marshall, Sharon (between Jackson and Ann Arbor) and Jackson. By the time he was 21, his father had left the railroad business for good and had purchased a farm in
Bloomingdale.
In 1882, 23 year old Edgar married Martha Emma Hall (the daughter of a Civil War soldier’s widow) and the couple headed to South Dakota to homestead. Railroads had made traveling relative easy, but there was nothing easy about life in northern South Dakota in the late 19th century. The summers were hot, the winters were frigid and the land was harsh; the territory would not become a state for another seven years.
Edgar and Martha would have three children while living in Edmunds, South Dakota including a son (Francis) who died there at the age of five. After Francis’s death, the family returned to Michigan and settled in Berlamont where another daughter was born and their children were raised. Edgar died in Berlamont 22 Sep 1930 and his wife, Martha, died six years later.

Notes from Aunt Alice (Lula's daughter):
"After Grandpa & Grandma Dean were married, they homesteaded in South Dakota near Aberdean for about 6 1/2 years. Due to weather conditions, they failed and returned to Michigan. My mother Lula Dean and Uncle Charlie Dean were born there. They also had a son Francis who died there. Clara Dean was born in Michigan".
