Biography

Ellen Walsh's Tennessee Death Record informs that Nellie was born in Ireland 13 Feb 1810 and died 30 Mar 1900 of old age.[1]

Nellie and John were married in Ireland about 1837 based on the birth of their oldest child. Most of their children were born in Ireland by 1849, at which point they came to the United States where John and his brother Hugh went to look for gold.[2] John and Nellie both died before the 1900 Census, the first to ask about immigration. 1900, 1910 and 1920 census data from their children states they immigrated as early as 1850 and as late as 1860. Sons Michael and Patrick were both Naturalized citizens, but so far records for this have not been located.

The Walsh farm was in Humphreys County, Tennessee. In 1860, John Walsh, 60, a laborer had an estate worth $300 in real estate and $552 in personal estate. He was born in Ireland. Also listed in the household were Ellen, 55, b. Ireland, keeping house; Patrick, 21; Mike, 17; Ellen, 14; Sarah, 11; and Ann, 7. All were born in Ireland except Ann was born in Tenn.[3]

John Welch was farming in Davidson County, Tennessee in 1870. He was age 70, had a personal estate of $800, and stated that his parents were of foreign birth. He was a citizen. Also in the household Ellen, 67, she and her parents were born in Ireland and Ann, 18, b. Alabama with foreign born parents. There were also two young male farm laboreres.[4]

In 1880, we learn that both John Welch (still farming) age 80, and wife, Ellen, 80, could not read or write.[5]

Nellie was buried at Calvary Cemetery next to her husband[6]

  2. Some information on the Walsh's is oral tradition. My mother and grandmother Selene had excellent memories. I remember Cousin Elizabeth Mooney (grandaughter of John and Nellie Walsh) when I was young, about 10, the people that we're talking about were in the memories of Cousin Elizabeth and Selene Rowan.
