Biography

Dora (Deardorff) Chronister was a Pennsylvanian.

Dora, daughter of George W. Deardorff and Rebecca Catherine Stallsmith,[1] was born 23 November 1879 in Adams County, Pennsylvania.[2] In 1880 six-month-old Dora lived in Butler Township, Adams County, with her parents George (age 34, farmer) and Rebecca Deardorff (32), and her siblings Anna Cora (10), Susan Ella (5) and Charles Edward (3), and their servant Calvin Bowers (18).[3]

The family rented a farm in 1900 in Tyrone Township, Adams County, where the household was comprised of George W. (age 55, tenant farmer) and Rebecca C. Deardorff (56, mother of seven, all living), Dora V. (21), her siblings Mary "Elsie" (18), George Nevin "Nervie" (16, farmhand), Grace Alverta Deardorff (13), her widowed sister Ella Susan (Deardorff) Shultz (27) and Ella's only son Mervin O. Shultz (7).[2]

On 30 October 1902 in East Berlin, Adams County, Dora married Charles Sylvester Chronister,[1] son of Ammon Chronister and his second wife Anna "Mary" Cramer.[1] They had seven children:

After their marriage the couple began their family in Huntington Township, Adams County.[21] In 1910 the household included Dora V. (age 30, mother of four, all living) and Charles S. Chronister (30, farmer), and their children Murray Clay Chronister (6), Ralph Harrison (4), Ruth Henrietta (4) and Charles Curtis (2).[21]

Dorie V. Chronister (age 40) and Charles S. (40, tenant farmer) could be found in Latimore Township, Adams County, in 1920 with their children Murray (16), Ralph H. (14), Ruth H. (14), Charley C. (12), Chester Herman (8) and Emory Clinton (2).[22]

By 1930 Dora V. (age 52) and Charles S. Chronister (50, farmer) were renting a home in Carroll Township, York County, Pennsylvania, which also domiciled their children Ralph H. (24, trucker, freight transfer), Ruth H. (24), Chester H. (20, farmhand) and Emery C. (13).[23] The family remained in Carroll Township in 1940, when the household included Charles S. (age 59, farmhand) and Dora V. Chronister (59), their children Ralph R. (35, farmhand), Ruth H. (35, house servant for private home), Chester H. (28, farmhand) and Emory C. (22, painter for building contractor), and Emory's wife Pauline F. (Gerber) Chronister (21).[19]

Dora died 1 February 1945 in York County, and was buried there at Dillsburg Cemetery.[24]
